Top 5 Reasons Why People Are Changing Careers

Do you know what is causing people to look for a career change? It's not just the cost of living, wanting to work from home, or working remotely. Occasionally it's all of those reasons plus more but there's always something that causes people to make life-changing decisions. Especially when you factor in the growing populations of baby boomers and millennials.

So if you’re wondering how you can keep hold of your star talent right now, or even considering what will attract new hires to your company; take a look at this list that the Tru Talent team have put together using data from EdenRed’s latest employee trends survey.

The pay just isn’t good enough

47% of respondents said that the top reason which would encourage them to stay in their role would be a pay rise; so make sure you’re benchmarking yourself against your competitors both locally but also nationally (as remote work becomes more prevalent).

No flexibility in the hours

The pandemic allowed everyone flexibility that they’d never seen before, so it’s no wonder that a whopping 37% of people now want to be in a role that offers flexibility within their hours. So this means you need to do more than just offer time off for a GP appointment.

Can’t work from home

Following on from hours, the next biggie on the list is having a role that allows location flexibility. So whether you have a work-from-home or work-from-anywhere policy. A huge 31% of people now expect this when applying for a new role.

Rubbish company perks

Gone are the days when the focus was on ping pong tables and beer fridges. 30% of team members now want much more tangible benefits, such as private medical or enhanced maternity pay. So really think about the benefits package that your business is offering if you want people to stay, or to entice newbies to your company.

No appreciation from employers

One that never goes away, is how teams feel about their managers and the owners. Employee appreciation comes in at a pretty 25% on EdenRed’s survey and unfortunately isn’t something that can easily be bought; this one all comes down to the morale and culture of the business.
