The Recruitment Market

We get so many emails and questions from clients and candidates asking us about the current recruitment market, which is no surprise given these still quite uncertain times… don’t worry we won’t mention the C-word.

Let's not kid ourselves though, the last few years have changed things for us all and especially our working lives, we’ve seen this in the dramatic increase in online collaborative workspaces and we know we don’t need to tell you about all the zoom calls. This has also had a significant impact on the recruitment market and has changed how many are approaching the hiring landscape.

At Tru Talent, our recruitment specialists pride themselves on always staying up to date with the latest movements and trends of the recruitment market to ensure they can support you in the most powerful way, be this through helping you find that next dream job or helping you source the best talent around. So in this blog, they want to bring you their expert insights to help you navigate this current market.

The first and maybe the most significant trend our recruitment specialists want you to know is that we are in a candidate-driven market. This means there are more roles available than there are skilled candidates to fill them. This has made things a little more difficult for employers who are looking to build and develop their teams with some of the best talent around. However, on the other hand, this is great news for employees because it means that on average permanent salaries are higher, employees are getting new opportunities to progress with their current employer and those who are looking for new roles have more options than ever before. Employers are also becoming more and more aware of this, which is meaning a much higher importance is placed upon developing good company culture, offering flexibility as well as remote working where possible.

Many sectors such as engineering, construction, manufacturing, and automotive are still struggling to find the right candidates they need for their roles, which means these sectors are bursting with opportunities.

This candidate-driven market may seem a little scary for employers who are now competing with more businesses than ever to land great new talent for their teams. A great way to get ahead of the competition is to have a clear recruitment plan for the next 6-12 months and establish the roles you would like to fill. Use this time to build a long-term relationship with a recruitment specialist that can support you to find the best talent for your available and future roles. Draw on their expertise, industry knowledge, and connections to stay ahead of recruitment trends so you are always in the most powerful position to attract amazing candidates that will help take your business to even greater heights. You’ll also want to develop your value proposition if you haven’t already. What makes your company and vacancies attractive to potential candidates and why are your employees continuing to work for your organisation? We must know that salary and locality are just not enough anymore to capture and retain top talent.

Secondly, our team shares that there is still a great level of hesitancy in the air, and who can blame us? Many candidates are hesitant to move jobs right now, even if a more suitable opportunity presents itself. This might be a familiar feeling for you too at the moment, however, research suggests that over 30% of UK employees plan to change jobs within the next 12 months and a further 20% of employees will be looking to move jobs if their employer does not continue to offer post covid remote working capabilities. In part, hesitancy has always been a staple of the recruitment process, but we encourage you not to let it get in the way of your next amazing opportunity.

Thirdly, there has been an unprecedented spike in the percentage of candidates who are dropping out at the offer stage and deciding not to take the role they have been interviewing for. It's not uncommon to have candidates drop out at the offer stage, but it is surprising the amount at which this is happening in the current market. This spike is most likely down to these candidates applying for multiple roles in a shotgun effect and not doing their due diligence before they apply.
